It’s so true. I’ve had them as well and I think what’s also so great about stories like these written with humor is the lesson sticks for those who haven’t had a similar experience yet.
Oh my, my stomach turned over reading this. I was hoping for a happy ending. My husband and I considered ourselves seasoned travelers, which may be why we let down our guard in Sarajevo and were robbed on day one. Luckily, we still had our passports. While trying to cancel credit cards & get help from friends, we heard over & over "Things are different in Bosnia". Indeed. We relied on the trust and goodwill of our hotel owner & a young Bosnian (who helped us make phone calls) to at least get a replacement card mailed to our next destination. Meanwhile, we had just a few American dollars which could not be exchanged anywhere. The hotel graciously allowed us to pay for our stay after we got home. And we did, via an Antioch college professor traveling to Sarajevo.
